Awhile back, Courtlyn was required to sign a sibling agreement for our adoption agency. It is a form that says she knowingly will have to share mommy and daddy as well as be kind and respect her sister. While driving one day, I told her she was going to have to go over it with us and sign it, but we forgot to do it that day. A few days later, she reminded me about the papers she needed to "sign" and ran to her room to get something to write with. She returned with a purple crayon and I hesitated for a moment...then thought why the heck not. She's five and five-year-olds write with crayons or markers or paint......sometimes food. It is not an official adoption document so I truly didn't care if she wrote in crayon...plus I thought it would be way more memorable in purple crayon rather than boring black ink. So we went over the agreement and she proudly wrote her name in her best penmanship crayongirlship. And I love it!
I wish we were able to keep one of the originals, but we had to mail them back with the rest of the paperwork. But something I love more came just after she signed that special paper.
With that same purple crayon, she began to write on a blank sheet of paper I love Y!!! S!!. I watched as she wrote about her love for her sister...someone she has only seen a few pictures of. Then, she began to draw her sister. But she didn't stop there, she continued to draw Y!!! S!!'s new family and created our first family portrait.
I absolutely adore this drawing and will joyously hang this on one of our walls soon. Jess was out of state when Courtlyn drew this so I sent him some pictures during the creation process. I'm pretty sure he had misty eyes just like me. And if you are curious, we are aged by the length of arm so Jess has the longest and Y!!! S!! has the shortest. And our cat, Max, made it into the portrait as well.
